Guam facts and figures for the Guam Views Blog

Guam is located in the Western Pacific Ocean with the East side on the Pacific Ocean and the west side in the Philippine Sea. Guam is on the edge the Asia Tectonic plate and the Pacific plate goes under it at the Marianas Trench just East of us.
Originally populated by approximately 30,000 native Chamorros, Guam was discovered by and claimed for Spain by Magellan in 1521. Spain lost control to the United States in 1898 as a result of their loss in the Spanish American War. The United States administer the island under Naval Administration and briefly lost control to the Japanese on December 7, 1941 (yes, Pearl Harbor Day). The United States took the island back in 1944.
Guam citizens became US Citizens under the Organic Act in 1950. Guam formed a civilian Government and the US took a reduced support role since.
Native Chamorro language was corrupted by Spanish and is still struggling to reassert usage among natives.
Current population is 164,000 people (10 percent of which are Caucasian). Major funding sources are tourism (over 1 million per year) and military/US Federal support. Agriculture and regional medicine are being explored to further bolster the economy.
